Science Cafe – Food Pasts and Futures: Ideas About Health and Agriculture in India
October 13, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Presenter: Carly Nichols, PhD student, School of Geography and Development
Over the last two decades, the North Indian state of Uttarakhand has been home to substantial economic development through farming. In the Nainital district, smallholder farmers have been especially successful in profiting from fruit trees, specialty vegetables, and the humble aloo –the Hindi word for potato. Carly will discuss her ethnographic fieldwork in the villages of the Nainital district, and share her research demonstrating how the shifting agricultural techniques that have resulted in profits and development in the region have also brought unintended consequences to both the land and people’s perceptions of health.
